About Our School

Bach Elementary School is located near the heart of Ann Arbor, Michigan in the Old West Side. Just like our city, Bach is a diverse, close-knit community with a focus on learning and growing together.

In 1898, Bach Elementary was named after Philip Bach, former Ann Arbor mayor and member of the school board for 34 years. The school originally opened in 1861 as the Second Ward School. Since then, it has gone through multiple additions while still maintaining historical aspects of the original building.

Our school community cares about how we can celebrate and share our Bach BEST each and every day. With a continued focus around celebrating our diversity and embracing our differences in an environment where all students are equally safe, valued and respected, we have implemented Bengal Dens at Bach.

Each month, we hold den meetings, where we learn about what it means to be our Bach BESTBe Yourself, Everyone is Welcome, Say Something, and Take Care of Others. Within each den, students participate in an activity with 12-14 students from grades Y5-5. Our entire staff leads or supports a den with a total of 24 different groups. Each spring, we hold a culminating school wide event to share with our families the projects and activities we've done in our dens throughout the year.
